Distance Learning

Eligible adults can study for the GED, take a practice test, enhance their job skills, and improve their English as long as they have access to a computer, the internet, and e-mail. All courses are free to eligible Kentucky residents.

Kentucky Virtual University
The Kentucky Virtual University (www.kyvu.org), the state's official online university, offers one-stop access to affordable college and professional development programs from Kentucky colleges, universities, and state agencies. KYVU provides quality education to individuals whose work and family situations may not allow them to come to campus, and gives on-campus students an opportunity to complete their degrees more quickly.

KYVU students are enrolled in courses offered by Kentucky's public and independent universities and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Students include adult education students and instructors enrolled in courses through www.KYVAE.org, a partnership with Kentucky Adult Education, and teachers enrolled in courses through www.KyEducators.org, a partnership with the Education Professional Standards Board. The Kentucky Virtual Library (www.kyvl.org) provides a convenient, single access point for statewide online library resources. Through the KYVL, Kentuckians can access databases covering a broad range of subjects and retrieve full-text articles from over 5,000 journals and magazines. Services include:

  • Interlibrary loan of books and articles
  • Electronic citation and full-text databases
  • Kentuckiana Digital Library
  • "How to Do Research" Tutorial

Kentucky Virtual Adult Education
KYVAE's mission is to provide adult students and instructors with every day, all day access to curriculum, information, resources, and services in an easy-to-use, motivational format. Adults can study for the GED, take a practice test, enhance their job skills, or improve their English as long as they have access to a computer, the Internet, and e-mail. Call center staff and 24/7 technical support are available to answer questions. All courses are free to Kentucky residents.

KYVAE also offers a one-stop shop for professional development. Adult education instructors can use the site to fulfill their training requirements, gain graduate credit, network with other instructors, and access the latest research, resources, lesson plans, and best practices in adult education. Services include:

  • GED preparation
  • Workplace education
  • English as a second language
  • Professional development for educators
  • 24/7 technical support
  • Call center with expanded hours
  • Occupational database
  • Resource guide to local programs

Kentucky Virtual High School (KVHS)
KVHS is an educational resource managed by the Kentucky Department of Education to expand student access to challenging high school courses. Through the KVHS, Kentucky schools can offer a wider range of coursework, more flexibility in scheduling, and opportunities for independent learning that are neither time nor place dependent.

Through the KVHS, schools can provide access to:

  • Expanded curriculum
  • Advanced Placement and foreign language courses
  • Additional options for credit recovery and summer enrichment
  • Quality home/health instruction
  • Increased instructional support for at-risk students
  • Expanded choices to meet the needs of the Gifted & Talented

KVHS also offers online professional development for teachers, administrators, and school councils.

KyEducators.org
Kentucky teachers, administrators, and individuals seeking professional positions in Kentucky schools now have anytime, anywhere access to online resources for rank change, training, and professional development. KyEducators.org (www.kyeducators.org) is a partnership between the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) and the Kentucky Virtual University, a unit of the Council on Postsecondary Education.

KyEducators.org features 28 online courses that provide educators with timely and efficient professional development to enhance career growth. Additional modules are underway. The online courses cover topics such as:

Electronic Campus
Electronic Campus (www.electroniccampus.org) is a comprehensive source for information about higher education opportunities in the South, from traditional campus study to distance education.

Electronic Campus offers e-learning opportunities and online services designed to meet the unique needs of adult students wishing to start, continue, or complete their education. It provides a simpler, friendlier place for adults to learn about and understand educational opportunities, to select courses that best match their needs, and to apply and enroll online. Traditional students can also use it to help them find a college in the South that's right for them.

Kentucky Educational Television (KET) (www.ket.org)
KET offers video instruction in adult basic skills and workplace education, as well as other products and services marketed by KET Enterprise.

Kentucky Tele-Linking Network (KTLN) (www.ket.org/ktln/)
The Kentucky Tele-Linking Network provides videoconferencing technology to colleges, public schools, and state agencies. The technology is available for both educational and informational purposes. Partners include Kentucky's public universities, K-12 schools, the Council on Postsecondary Education, the Department of Education, Kentucky Educational Television, and the Governor's Office of Technology.
